As part of its ongoing campus renewal, the Western Academy of Beijing has been revitalizing a number of its facilities — among them, the Blue Theatre. Although the name of the space was well established, its original interior bore little connection to it. AnySCALE’s new design takes inspiration from the children’s story The Rainbow Fish, in which a beautiful fish shares its shimmering scales with others as a gesture of friendship and generosity.
Drawing on this parable, anySCALE transformed the theatre’s interior into a vibrant, textured environment adorned with an array of colorful, scale-like wall elements that bring the story’s spirit to life. Beyond the visual concept, particular care was devoted to the theatre’s technical performance. The acoustic system was completely restructured: by reintegrating sound-absorbing and sound-reflecting materials across walls and ceiling, the design significantly enhanced the stage’s sound projection — resulting in a richer, more immersive experience for the audience.
