anySCALE transformed a Qing dynasty courtyard mansion into a contemporary exhibition space that celebrates its architectural heritage while weaving in the spirit of Nanjing’s famed YunJin brocade tradition.
Four buildings and three courtyards unfold in sequence, guiding visitors through a serene spatial journey. The entrance foyer and library retain their intricate dark wood carvings, while subtle additions—a curved timber backdrop and gold-patterned pendant lights—create contrast and warmth. The first courtyard’s circular pool, gravel textures, and greenery evoke quiet balance and traditional Chinese harmony.
Inside, fabric backdrops and wooden slat ceilings soften the historic shell, framing scale models and exhibition pieces. As visitors move through the courtyards, spaces shift from reflective to social: a lounge with draping fabric shades, a model gallery with suspended textile lighting, and modular furniture referencing embroidery motifs. The final courtyard extends the experience outdoors, adjoining a community center and private offices.
By preserving the building’s structure and artistry, anySCALE created a fluid narrative where architecture, craft, and landscape intertwine—an homage to both heritage and creative renewal.
